Helen Elizabeth Burdick Sloat, of Zelienople, PA, died on May 20, 2018, six days after her 86th birthday. She was born in Cockeysville, MD on May 14, 1932 to Eva Gardner Burdick and Gleason A. Burdick. She graduated from Strongsville High School in Strongsville, Ohio and attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio. It was there she met John Sloat whom she married in 1955. She attended Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and in 1955 received a BS in Nursing degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. At the graduation ceremony, she was honored as the top student in her class.
She worked as an RN in the Princeton Hospital, Princeton, NJ while her husband was attending Princeton Theological Seminary. They moved to Pataskala, Ohio where her husband had his first pastorate, and it was there that their two daughters, Linda and Laurie, were born. Four years later, in 1961, they moved to New Castle, PA where her husband became pastor of the Northminster United Presbyterian Church, and where their son, David, was born in 1968. While they were there, she worked as a school nurse in Neshannock Township, at the Overlook Medical Clinic in New Wilmington PA for ten years, and as an instructor in psychiatric nursing at the Jameson Hospital School of Nursing in New Castle. Finally, she went to the Human Services Center in New Castle, where she retired in 2011 as Supervisor of Nurses after 24 years of service.
While at Northminster, she was the church librarian, sang in the church choir, played in the bell choir, and served as substitute organist at many of the churches in town. She later became a ruling elder in the church.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived for her family. She is survived by her husband, John Sloat of 62 years, her three children: Linda Burig (Ron), Laurie Silverstein (Mitch), David Sloat (Amy); eight grandchildren: Melissa Burig Dimond (Ryan), Amanda Burig Smith (Grant), Robert J. Burig (Erin), Alex Silverstein, Rachael Silverstein Silverbauer (Josh), Madison Sloat, Dylan Sloat, and Grace Sloat; and five great-grandchildren: Jack and Emily Dimond, Brayden Smith, R.J. and Mackenzie Burig. She had one sister, Ruth Burdick Stackhouse, and a brother, Gleason Burdick, deceased. Her hobbies included piano and organ, gardening, needlework and sewing, reading and mostly enjoying being a wife, mother and grandmother. After retirement she helped with Meals on Wheels and Friends of the Library. While at Passavant, she volunteered in the library, played in the bell choir and played the piano for hymnsings.
Donations can be made to Calvin Presbyterian Church, Zelienople, PA where she was a member, the Human Services Center in New Castle where she served for 24 years, or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements will be handled by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, where there will be visiting hours from 2-4 and 6-8 on Thursday, May 31, 2018. A memorial service will be held at the Passavant Community Chapel, 105 Burgess Drive, Zelienople, PA on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 11:00.
