Irvin E. Hawthorne, 91, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of September 8, 2012 in Jameson Care Center.Irvin was born on June 8, 1921, in Ellwood City, to the late Warren and Orpha Rhoades Hawthorne. He married Margaret DeHaven Smith on February 11, 1978. She survives. Mr. Hawthorne served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in WW II in the European Theatre. Irvin worked in the maintenance department at Jameson Hospital and Universal Rundle. He enjoyed gardening and tinkering in his basement, garage, and shed. Mr. Hawthorne attended Hoover Heights CMA Church.In addition to his wife, Irvin is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Frank Stultz of New Carrollton, MD; two step daughters and their husbands, Phyllis Lynn and Rev. Hiram Westover of Clearfield, PA and Sharon Lee and Robert Thompson of New Castle; one step son, James Charles Smith of New Castle; one brother, Robert Hawthorne of New Castle; one sister, Orpha Shifflet of Port Tobacco, MD; and 12 step grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and John Hawthorne; three sisters, Hazel Snell, Clarabelle Lumm and Tina Brua.Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2012, from 1-2 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Rd.A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Hiram Westover will officiate. Burial will take place in Oak Park Cemetery.
