Calvin Sammons, 87, of Ellport, passed away in a car accident on Friday, April 6, 2018. Born on Dec. 22 1930, he was the son of Dana and Jean (Watson) Sammons from Wattsburg, Erie County. Calvin is survived by four children: Susan Sammons (husband Michael Garner) Meeker, Co., John (Terry) Sammons, New Wilmington, Pa., Marilyn (Henry) Morphis, Valparaiso, In., and David (Bonnie) Sammons, Horse Cave, Ky., brother Fred (Barbara) Sammons, Kalamazoo, Mi., sister, Rosalyn (Lee) Kummer, Evans City, Pa., sister-in-law Olive Sammons, Wattsburg, Pa., sister-in-law Ann Sammons Stewart, Florida, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. Calvin was preceded in death by first wife Marion of 44 years, second wife Vera of 15 years, brothers George and Jim, and grandson Paul. Calvin was a United States Army veteran who later earned a Masters degree in dairy science from Penn State University. He served as a County Agriculture Extension Agent for Penn State Extension in Washington and Lawrence counties for 35 years. Calvin truly enjoyed his career assisting the agricultural community including the many 4-H clubs. A true community servant, many civic groups were blessed by his willingness to do the practical work to help the organization succeed. He spent many of his later years with the Ellwood City Lions Club, the Ellwood City Historical Society, and Meals on Wheels. He took on personal responsibility for maintaining flower gardens at Ewing Park. Calvin was a gifted repairman who kept his toolbox in his truck ready to go. Calvin particularly enjoyed helping sister Rosalyn and son David on their dairy farms. Calvin was a member of Third Presbyterian Church of New Castle since 1960 where again his practical servant heart was known by all. Calvin was known to be one of the most active older adults that many people ever knew. If he was not helping or learning a new subject, helping a neighbor or serving a civic club, he would be attending local theater and musical shows. Friends and family will gather at Cunninghams Funeral Home, New Castle on Wednesday 4-11-18 from 6pm-8pm and Thursday 4-12-18 from 11am-12noon, followed immediately by a memorial service. Reverends Rosalyn Kummer and Connie Frierson will officiate.
