Jacquelyn Rita Kurjan Levine, 85, of Austin, Texas, formerly of New Castle, PA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, after a brief illness. Throughout her life, Jacquelyn was a feisty and determined lady who never hesitated to help others understand the right way to accomplish a task or approach a problem. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, a dog lover, and an antique collector. Jackie was born December 14, 1929 to the late Saul and Ann Kurjan in Youngstown, Ohio. As a youngster, Jackie was a self-professed tomboy, preferring to play ball with the boys and shoot tin cans with a BB gun. She graduated from Youngstown Ursuline High School. After high school, Jackie studied to become a medical assistant and worked in several physicians offices in Youngstown. In February, 1952, after a whirlwind courtship, Jackie married New Castle businessman Lester Levine and moved to the family home in Pennsylvania. They were inseparable companions for the next 52 years. She worked seasonal stints in Lester's Mens Wear, opened Jackie's Antiques in Neshannock Township, and later was employed at Al Sweet Motor Company. Jackie served her community in many capacities for the Temple Israel Sisterhood and was active in many local charities. She loved to search the Pennsylvania countryside for rare Early American antiques, to travel, to sing and play the piano, and to do needlework. Jackie and Lester retired to Hobe Sound, Florida, in 1998. In 2013 she moved first to Buda, Texas, then to Lakeway, Texas, to live close to her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. She is survived by her son Steve Levine, daughter-in-law Linda Levine, and grandsons Nathan and Alex Levine, all of Austin; by her granddaughter Lindsey Levine of Fort Worth, Texas, and by six nephews and one niece. Jacquelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester, and her brother Phelps Kurjan of Youngstown. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Monday at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Howie Stern officiating. Burial will be in Temple Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jackie's memory to the Autism Society of America.
