James L. Fleeger, Sr., 80, of New Castle, entered into his Heavenly rest the morning of October 24, 2014 at VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler.Born October 18, 1934, in New Castle, he was the son of of John Wayne and Leona Reese Fleeger.Jim married Karen "Valjean" Morris Fleeger on January 28, 1983. She survives.He graduated from Princeton High School.Jim was a retired lieutenant police officer of the New Castle City police department. He received many awards for his bravery in the line of duty.Jim, aka "Honey", was a kind hearted, loving husband and father who wore many hats. He was Poppy, Pappy, Grandpa, Grandfather, and Pap. He was the official "Patriarch" of our family.He was an avid Steeler and Pirate fan, spending many happy hours cheering them on at family Sunday dinners. His three beloved cats always joined in these events. He enjoyed playing cards, board games and Words With Friends. He stayed current with technology and traveled to many places via his laptop. Always a reader of books, he enjoyed the transition to his Kindle for his reading.Joking was an integral part of his life. He loved to laugh and always found the lighter side of life. We celebrate his life.Jim is survived by his wife, Valjean; two sons, James L. (Diane) Fleeger, Jr. of New Castle, Richard L. (Diane) Fleeger of Scottsdale, AZ; and two stepsons, Chadwick Earl Dean, and Wesley Robert Dean; a brother, Dr. John (Carol) Fleeger of Shawnee, KS; two sisters-in-law, Carol Welker, and Sandra (John) Galanski, both of New Castle; a loving niece, Angel (Shawn) DeChellis of Ambridge; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.Jim was preceded in passing by his parents, three sisters, Elizabeth, Norma Jean Fleeger and Esther Seaver; a brother, Jackie Fleeger; and a grandson, Damon Fleeger.Visitation will be Monday, October 27, 2014, 1-4 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Bupp officiating.
