James R. Madison, 81, a lifetime resident of New Castle, passed away the night of April 17, 2026, at his Neshannock Township residence.
Born June 17, 1944, in New Castle, he was the son of Wilbert H. and Darlye L. (Barris) Madison.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Karen Lee (Costello) Madison, whom he married March 1, 1969.
After his graduation from Neshannock High School, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1962-1966 with the rank of Airman 1st Class.
Jim was employed with the Construction and General Laborers Union Local 964, New Castle, until his retirement when he enjoyed driving the Amish to various job sites and assisted by using his construction skills.
Among his interests, he enjoyed hunting at his camp in Tionesta, listening to country music and spending time with his family. Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janice (Ray) Fontana and Kimberly (David) Tonnies, all of New Castle; one son, James Madison II, of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Alfred (Lynn) Madison and William L. Madison, both of Findlay, Ohio; one sister, Judith E. Patterson of Akron, OH; and three grandchildren, Angelina Fontana, Sophia Madison and Joseph Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Charles Patterson.
Private services were held for the family at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Gary Swogger and Rev. Jim Swogger officiating. Full military rites were performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.
