James R Mauk, 95, New Castle, passed away peacefully Friday morning in his home at Jameson Place. Born August 16, 1920, in Sprankle Mills, Pennsylvania, Jim was a son of the late Jacob and Nora Mauk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, to whom he was married for 68 years. Jim was a veteran of World War II where he served his country in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home from France, Jim worked for many years as a coal miner with his older brothers in Punxsutawney. In the early sixties, Jim became an employee of T.W. Phillips Gas and Oil Company, in Butler, Pennsylvania. He held various positions with the gas company until retirement. In retirement, Jim became well known for his woodworking skills and ability to make and fix anything. Family and friends were blessed with his creations. During the last few years, Jim spent hours putting together jigsaw puzzles and enjoying the company of his friends at Jameson Place. Jim was involved with numerous organizations during his lifetime and was especially proud of being a Past Master with the Masons in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania. He is survived by a daughter, Janice Janosik(Christopher) of West Chester, and a daughter-in-law, Sally Mauk of New Castle. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Russell Mauk of Raleigh, NC, Alison Moze(Mike) of Cranberry Township, Emily Janosik of West Chester, Susan Kessler(Stuart) of Hillsborough, NJ, Marcie Reinhard of Raleigh, NC, and Doug Seeger of New Castle; 10 great-grandchildren, Jake, Sam and Layla Mauk, Brady Moze, Aaron and Justin Kessler, Ashley Giordano, Douglas Seeger and Christopher and Morgan Reinhard; 1 great-great grandchild, Bennett James Giordano. He was preceeded in death by his son, James Richard Mauk, and nine brothers and sisters. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who blessed Jim's life over the past couple of years, providing excellent care, companionship and friendship. The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care he received the past week by staff of Jameson Place and Jameson Hospice. In respect of Jim's wishes, burial will be private at Lakelawn Memorial Park in Reynoldsville, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County, 1211 Wilmington Avenue, New Castle, PA 16105.
