Obituary

James R. Roberts, Sr., 87, of Shenango Township, passed away the morning of November 18, 2017 at his home. Born October 9, 1930 in New Castle, he was the son of Eugene L. and Lauretta O. Adams Roberts. He was preceded in death on April 8, 1992 by his first wife of 43 years, Ruth I. Reynolds Roberts, whom he married on November 12, 1948. He subsequently married Patricia I. Roberts on September 8, 1995 and she passed away August 24, 2016. A 1948 graduate of New Castle High School, Mr. Roberts was employed in maintenance with Mooney Brothers Trucking and Supply Co. He then worked as an electrician both with Mesta Machine and with Babcock and Wilcox until his retirement. Mr. Roberts also worked, for many years after his retirement, part time at 4 Ways. James served as an active member of the Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department since 1953 until recently. He served as past president of the Relief Association, was the Assistant Chief, and various other positions. In addition to his love for the fire department, Jim enjoyed NASCAR. He was a former member of Maitland Memorial Primitive Methodist church and was affiliated with Faith Country Chapel. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah J. Roberts of Newport News, VA and Barbara J. (Doug) Feil of New Castle; one son, James R. (Carol) Roberts, Jr. of New Castle; one sister, Leah Magee of New Castle; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one step daughter; one step grandson and one step great granddaughter. In addition to his parents and both wives, he was preceded in death by one son, John D. Roberts; one infant great-grandson, Joseph James Falba; and one brother, Eugene D. Roberts. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 5 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 5 pm at the funeral home with the Rev. John Yergan officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
