John (Jack) Wilbur Flannery, 74 of 135 Clen Moore Boulevard, passed away the afternoon of March 24, 2016, with his family at his side. Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1942, he was the son of Dr. Wilbur E. Flannery and Ruth Donaldson Flannery. Jack was a 1960 graduate of New Castle Senior High school. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1964 and Dickinson School of Law in 1967. Upon completing law school, Jack clerked for the Law Firm of Chambers, O'Neil, Nicolls & Balph. Following his practice there, he worked for the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office from 1968 to 1970. After leaving the Attorney General's Office, Jack went on to be the Vice President and Trust Officer at Sky Trust, successor to First Western Trust Services Company and First National Bank of Lawrence County from 1970-1996. Jack left Sky Trust to join, as a partner, the Law Firm of Balph, Nicolls, Mitsos, Flannery & Clark, later named, Nicolls, Flannery & Palmer, where he specialized in Trust and Estate Planning, Administration and Orphan's Court Litigation. Jack was a Member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, where he was a Member of the House of Delegates, Member of the Board of Governors representing Zone 10, and a Member of the Editorial Committee. He was also an active member of Lawrence County Bar Association where he served as Chairman of the annual essay contest, was on the Executive Committee from 1996-2000 and served as the President from 1998 until 2000. Jack was very active in the Community including having served as follows: President of the New Castle YMCA, President of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, President of the Lawrence County United Way, President of the Highland Presbyterian Church Board of Trustees, Director of the Lawrence County Community Foundation. In addition to his service, he had been recognized by a number of organizations, including, being the recipient of the New Castle Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Foundation, Pennsylvania Bar Foundation Fellow and the The Gilbert Nurick Award, Pennsylvania Bar Association Conference of County Bar Leaders. Jack married the Love of His Life, Nancy T. Flannery on July 24, 1971, whom he cherished every moment with. In addition to his Wife, he is survived by his children, Brian Flannery, Bill Flannery and his wife Alyssa, and Jennifer and her Husband, Bruce. Jack also has three grandchildren, Nicholas, Gabriella and Harper. He is also survived by his twin brother Richard (wife Linda), younger brother Harry (wife Maureen) brother in law Bill Thrush (wife Peggy) 14 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by one brother, Charles F. Flannery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 28th at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 29th at Highland Presbyterian Church 708 Highland Avenue, New Castle, Pennsylvania. The family prefers in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the New Castle YMCA or Highland Presbyterian Church.
