John "Jack" Hemphill, Sr., 81, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of August 14, 2015 at Jameson Hospital. Born December 20, 1933 in Mercer County, Pa., he was a son of Joseph L. and Ruth Ashton Hemphill. Surviving at home is his wife of 37 years, Barbara A. Dunlavey Hemphill, whom he married August 12, 1978. After attending New Castle High School, Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1960 during the Korean Conflict. He also served with the Navy Seabee's during Hurricane Camille in Mississippi. Jack was employed as a quality control inspector with Peerless-Winsmith in Warren, Ohio until his retirement in 1992. Prior, he worked as a welding supervisor for 28 years with Mesta Machine. Jack loved the outdoors, often hunting, fishing, or camping. He also enjoyed country music, western movies, and his dog "Coco". He was of Presbyterian faith. In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by one daughter, Stephanie Hemphill Squicquero of New Castle; two sons, John (Valerie) Hemphill, Jr. and Kevin (Barbara) Hemphill, all of New Castle; one sister, Shirley (Mervin) Nagel of Gloucester, VA; 11 grandchildren, Jamie Hemphill, Sherry (Jason) Cropf, James Hemphill, Ashley Sager (fiance Brett Evans), Amberlee Sager, Robert Ronald, Ryan (Keri) Ronald, Robin (Eric) Spiker, Jeremy Markovitch, Jessica Markovitch and Jeena Markovitch; 7 great-grandchildren, Kayden Hemphill, Reece Vankirk, Adrien Evans, Chloe Cropf, Kylie Cropf, Austin Ronald and Haylee Ronald. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Neil Hemphill. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. The New Castle Area Honor guard will perform military rites at 8:00 p.m at the conclusion of visitation. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Matthew Bupp officiating. Burial will be in Castle View Cemetery.
