John C. Mershimer, 92, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of Feb. 3, 2024, at the Avalon Nursing Center.
John was born in New Castle to the late Charles and Eva Mershimer. He married his wife, Ethel "Cis," in 1961. She preceded him in passing.
John graduated from Princeton High School. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea. He was a supervisor at Penn Power at the time of his retirement. Mr. Mershimer loved golfing and wintering in Florida for over 25 years in a home he shared with his beloved wife. John was a passionate sports fan and an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He was a lifelong member of Princeton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Mershimer is survived by his daughter, Lori of New Castle; one brother, Richard, of Sharon, Pennsylvania; one sister, Eleanor, of New Castle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, John was preceded in passing by six sisters, Helen, Jean, Lois, Edna, Edith and Doris; one twin brother, Joe; one niece, Susie; and one nephew, Mark.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. Pastor Randy Stringer will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
The Mershimer family would like to thank the staff at the Avalon Nursing Center for their care and compassion towards John. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society, in John's name.
