John R. Munnell, 72, of 31 Fields Drive, New Castle, passed away the morning of January 5, 2013 in Jameson Hospital. Born August 26, 1940, in New Castle, PA, he was the son of John W. and Mildred J. Shaffer Munnell. He is survived by his loving wife, Marla Hudak Munnell, whom he married June 21, 1993. He was a graduate of Shenango High School. John retired in 1996 from Penn Power Co., after 30 years of service in the area of supervising/customer accounting. He then worked over 15 years as an estimator with C.J. Long Paving. John was an avid baseball player, hunter, and bowler. He was inducted into the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was past president of the North County Baseball League and was also inducted in the F.E.K. North County Baseball League Hall of Fame in 2011. John was past president of the Automotive Bowling League and in 1996 was proud to have bowled a 300 game. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Chuck Long of Naples, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Barbra Munnell of Hubbard, OH; a step son Mike and wife Tiana Hughes of New Castle; two sisters, Mary Lou and husband John Trimble of New Castle and Joan and husband Robert Gwin of New Castle; and seven grandchildren, Ashley Long, Jessica Long, Chad Long, Cory Munnell, Lea Munnell, Aubrey Munnell and Yuriah Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Jean Cameron.Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A service will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Cheryl Waguespack will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
