John E. "Jack" Riggans, Sr., 87, of Union Township, passed away the morning of February 4, 2012 at the Haven Convalescent Home.Born June 21, 1924 in New Castle, he was a son of John W. and Louanna Hall Riggans. He married Betty L. Frisbee on May 3, 1952. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2011.He attended New Castle High School and was employed with Nickles Bakery where he loaded trucks and made deliveries. He then worked for Mesta Machine in maintenance. Amongst his employment, he worked in sales for Riggans' Advertising. Jack had the ability to play any stringed instrument by ear, however, he was most interested in the guitar, the mandolin and the piano. When he was a young adult he was a member of a blue grass band. Jack also enjoyed fishing.He attended Wayside Community Church.Jack spent most of his life caring for his son, Scott, until he passed away.He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randall W. and Kimberly Riggans and John E. Riggans, Jr., all of New Castle; one brother, Leonard Riggans of New Castle; one sister, Verona Schetrom of New Castle; four grandchildren, Kristina Riggans, Emily Riggans, John E. and Samantha Riggans, III, and Melissa and Mike Conley; and three great-grandchildren, Madison Conley, Maddox Conley and Mackenzie Conley.In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Scott A. Riggans; a daughter-in-law, Virginia L. Riggans; five brothers; Ronard, Pete, Charley, Jim and Melvin Riggans, and three sisters; Edith Toman, Delora Hosler and Valera Lyons.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 7, 2012, at the funeral home. Pastor Hope Cummins will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
