Joseph P. Benigas, age 76, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of January 27, 2023, at Jefferson Hospital.

Born November 18, 1946, in New Castle, he was the son of Joseph and Anna Marie (Lombardo) Benigas.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carole (Bianchi) Benigas, whom he married on August 23, 1969.

After his graduation from New Castle High School, Joe attended Youngstown State University. With his love for music, he became a member of the 384th Army field band and later was selected into the Army Band. He attended the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mr. Benigas was a salesman with Desco Electric until he gained employment with Emerson Electric in Farrell. In addition, Joseph was owner and partner with his uncle Bob, cousin Ralph and son Pat in a Handel's Ice Cream Franchise in New Castle.

Joseph was an avid sports fan and enjoyed participating in softball with his church league, bowling and food. His greatest love was being with his family. He was a member of First Assembly of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Patrick Benigas and his wife Lisa of New Castle, and one grandson, Antonio Benigas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 2, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.

A Memorial Service will take place immediately following visitation at 3:00 at the funeral home with Ralph Lombardo officiating.
