Joseph E. Walters, 86, of New Castle, passed away the evening of February 17, 2011 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.Joseph was born on January 9, 1925, in New Castle, to the late Thomas and Vera Walker Walters. He graduated from New Castle High School and went off to serve his country, achieving the rank of Seaman 1st class in the US Navy. Joseph married the former Erla M. "Babe" Pander on April 11, 1948. She preceded him in death, after sharing 54 years together, on January 13, 2002. Joseph worked as a carpenter for 30 years for the Crane Company, before retiring in 1981. He continued to work, until 1991, as an assistant in the kitchen at Y.D.C.He is survived by his loving children and their spouses, Kimberley and Perry Bartholomew and Terry and Betsy Walters both of New Castle; two siblings, Russell Walters of Newton Falls, OH and Dorothy Costal of Phoenix, AZ; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, Thomas Walters and one sister, Shirley Walters.Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Rd.Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Dennis Bupp will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
