Joyce I. Urban, 84, of New Castle, passed away the morning of April 9, 2018 in Dayton Ohio.
Born August 23, 1933, in Tiffin, Ohio, she was the daughter to the late Fred and Nellie Wertz Scaife. She married Ronald E. Urban on March 28, 1958. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2009.
Joyce was a 1952, valedictorian from Hopewell Loudon High School in Bascom, Ohio. She then went on to graduate from Flower Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. From there she started her nursing career, as a head nurse of the maternity ward, at Mercy Hospital in Tiffin Ohio. She later became the nursing supervisor at Greenville Hospital for 21 years where she retired in 1994.
She loved spending time with her family and loved various hobbies such as genealogy, volunteering, and mission work. She was involved in the Association of Baptist for World Evangelism in Harrisburg, medical missions trip to Haiti, and worked for the American Cancer Society, where she was Nurse of Hope in 1981 for Mercer County. She was in charge of Operation Christmas Child shoe box ministry for eight years and was the drop off coordinator for several years. As an active member of Calvary Independent Church, she sang in the choir and was the Ladies Missionary secretary and treasurer. From 2005-2010, she helped with the medical organization for The Children's Hope Center in Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Joyce is survived by two daughters; Nancy (Thomas) Winn of Anderson IN., and Rhonda (Brad) Smith of Cedarville, OH., two sons; Daniel (Denise) Urban of Lakeland, FL and James (Joline) Urban of New Castle, Pa., five brothers; Robert and Richard Scaife both of Tiffin, OH., Jack Scaife of Amherst, OH., John Scaife of Toledo, OH., David Scaife of Litchfield, OH., one sister; Jane Shepherd of Flower Branch, GA., 11 grandchildren; Danielle (Candido) Maldonado, DeAnna (Douglas) Day, Elise (David) Quackenbos, Steven Winn, Chad (Katie) Smith, Jeremy , Jenna Smith, Julianne, Amanda, Joshua and Lindsey Urban, and 1 great-grandchild; Angelo Maldonado.
Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Scaife.
Visitation will be held on Saturday April 14, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Calvary Independent Church 424 E. Moody Ave., New Castle. A memorial service honoring Joyce's life will be held immediately following visitation at 10:30, with the Rev. Charles Fombelle officiating.
