Obituary

Julius Johnson, 87, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of April 15, 2014 at his residence.Born February 19, 1927, in New Castle, he was a son of John and Mary Zajac Johnson.Surviving at home is his wife, Adella "Bunny" Greer Bigley Johnson, whom he married June 24, 1950.Julius was a graduate of New Castle High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945-1947. He retired as a Sr. Master Sergeant with the U.S. Airforce Reserve.He was a 37 year employee of Rockwell International, from 1949 until his retirement in 1986.Julius was a former employee of both the Reynolds Funeral Home and the R. Cunningham Funeral Home as a door greeter for several years.He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.His favorite hobbies were gardening and reading.Julius was a devoted member and usher at St. Joseph's Church.In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John Johnson and his partner Lawrence Reynolds of Arlington, Va; four daughters, Kathy (Frank) Ocel of Pittsburgh, Julie (Robert) Handlos of Uniontown, Oh, Joannie (Steve) Handlos and Melanie (Brian) Melcer of New Castle; one brother, Richard Johnson of Oregon; and seven grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marion and Leonard Johnson.Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014, from 1:00-3:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, April 21, 2014 at St. Joseph's Church at 10:00 a.m. The service will be officiated by Rev. Father Frank Almade.Burial will be in St. Philip and James Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
