Kimberly Ann (Kerr) McCormick, age 60, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior before dawn on Saturday, July 25, 2020. Born April 15, 1960, in New Castle, PA, she was a daughter of the late James Russell Kerr and Sydney (Rodgers) Shumaker and Thomas Alvah Shumaker who survive. On August 25, 1979, she married her beloved husband of 41 years, Rodney Wayne McCormick, who survives. Kim was a 1978 graduate of Laurel High School who spent her senior year as a foreign exchange student in Austria. Upon her return, she and Rod were engaged and began a love story in marriage just one year later. Kim graduated in 1984 with summa cum laude honors from Slippery Rock University attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She later secured a Masters of Education from Westminster College, New Wilmington. Beginning at Shenango Schools, Kim soon became an elementary school educator at Wilmington Area School District that lasted nearly 30 years. A lover of all things books and music, Kim was certified as a reading specialist and vocal music teacher serving in these capacities toward the close of her teaching career in 2019. To honor her enthusiasm and dedication to students, the Kimberly Ann McCormick Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established. Income from the fund will provide an annual scholarship award to a graduating senior at the Wilmington Area School District who plans to pursue a career in elementary education. The fund will be administered by the Lawrence Community Foundation and the selection of the recipient will be made by the school's administration. As a 2011 cancer survivor, Kim became a writer and published author. Wrapped in His Arms of Love chronicles Kim's journey back to health through a strong faith in the Lord, exceptional medical practitioners, and the love and support of her husband, family and friends. Her second publish, Lessons Learned from Little Kings & Queens depicts valuable insights she and her coworkers gleaned as public school teachers from their young students. All proceeds from both book sales have been donated to further cancer research of which Kim recently exceeded her personal goal of $20,000 in donations. Lifelong members of First Baptist Church, Kim and Rod trained in Philadelphia to lead the church's Cancer Care Ministry. Along with a group of dedicated helpers, they have loved and encouraged others who battle this disease. Kim served as a Christian women's speaker with Stonecroft Ministries, and also independently, at many women's events and retreats. It was a mission of love that she and Rod traveled together in order to "give back" after her initial healing from cancer. Rod was her driver, technician, supporter and confidante on these road trips across the eastern United States where Kim openly shared her faith in the gospel of Jesus. Not limited to speaking or vocal talents, Kim was instrumentally gifted on flute and piano which she shared with others at various churches. A review from her book Wrapped in His Arms of Love states, "With the love and support of family and friends and a strong faith in the Lord, she finds the strength and courage to face her moments of weakness and move beyond them with humor and grace. She shows us how caring for others can make it easier to care for ourselves." It was in that spirit that Kim bravely faced a recurrence of cancer last year from which upon her passing she is now declared fully healed. In addition to her husband, Kim is survived by two daughters, Kaycee (Timothy) Aubel of Cranberry Twp., and Nicolette (Luke) O'Hara of New Castle, and four grandchildren: Trenton Patrick Aubel, Avonlea Grace O'Hara, Linya Noelle O'Hara, and Irelyn Lane Aubel. Sisters who survive include Rhonda (Dan) Wagner and Jamie Kerr of New Castle. Surviving step siblings include Thomas (Lauri) Shumaker and Amy (Phillip) Ridderhof. Kim is also survived by a loving family of in-laws, Wayne and Janet McCormick and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29, from 2:00-4:00 at First Baptist Church, 984 W. Maitland Lane, New Castle. A Celebration of Life Service for Kim will be held immediately following visitation at 4:00 P.M. Visitors are asked to adhere to CDC guidelines regarding wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. Arrangements have been entrusted to the R.
