Lewis R. Shields, 94, formerly of Decker Drive, New Castle passed away the morning of March 3, 2013, at Jameson Care Center. Born May 27, 1918, in Oil City, he was a son of Orville J. and Margaret Hause Shields.Preceding him in death on January 12, 2009, was his wife of 64 years, Margaret R. Burt Shields, whom he married on June 16, 1944. He was a graduate of Oil City High School. Lewis was a Staff Sergeant during WWII in the Army Air Corps where he received four bronze stars and the Air Medal for outstanding courage and skill during aerial flight as gunner of a B-25 aircraft. He was employed as a clerk with Kirk Hutton Hardware for 44 years. Lewis was a member of the Toastmaster Club and a volunteer at Jameson Hospital. He was a devoted member and former trustee of Northminster Presbyterian Church. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis D. and Kathy Shields of Stockbridge, GA and Gregory L. Shields of Seattle, WA; a brother Peter L. Shields and his wife Nadine of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. In addition to his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Woods; four brothers, Arnold, Orville, Neil and Edward Shields; and two sisters, Ruth Books and Louise Moyer. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. Andrew Jillson. Burial will be in Jerusalem Corners Cemetery in Pleasantville, PA.
