Lois Katherine Balph, 92, of Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington, passed away the afternoon of March 18, 2019 at UPMC Jameson Hospital.
Born March 8, 1927 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Irvine A. and Emma (Wilson) Balph who preceded her in death.
A graduate of New Castle High School, she received her Bachelors degree from Muskingum College and obtained a Masters degree in education from Westminster College.
Lois was employed with the New Castle Area School District as a teacher for 35 years until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators.
A life member of Highland Presbyterian, Lois parents were charter members of the church in 1903 and Lois continued their faithful service to that congregation. She was an elder, serving multiple terms on Session. She also served as a Sunday school teacher, on the Mission Committee and sang in the choir. She was looked to as the church historian, reminding the church of their storied past.
She is survived by her three cousins, Richard LaDu of Ashtabula, Ohio, Rev. Joe LaDu of Venice, Florida, and Esther Balph Holgate of Minnesota.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles and two cousins, David Balph and John Balph.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m. followed by a fellowship time at Highland Presbyterian Church, 708 Highland Avenue, New Castle.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
