Obituary

Lois J. "Tootie" Houk Harlan, 88, of New Castle, passed away the morning of Thursday, July 20, 2017 at her residence. Born in Wayne Township, Lawrence County on June 24, 1929, she was a daughter of Jesse G. Weingartner and Meryl F. Hazen Weingartner. On January 27, 1947, she married Wayne T. Houk. He preceded her in death after 40 years of marriage on March 31, 1987. Subsequently on August 11, 1994, she married Arthur C. Harlan who preceded her in death on January 17, 2013. A life-long resident of New Castle, Mrs. Harlan was a homemaker who found great joy in caring for her family. She was a former member of Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church and a current member of the Church of Genesis. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra K. (Sam) Isabella of New Castle; one son, Alan W. (Lorree) Houk of Bessemer; two step-sons, Timothy J. Harlan and Paul A. Harlan, both of Maryland; one brother, Harold "Bucky" Weingartner of Ellwood City; two sisters, Norma Yoho of Ellwood City and Arlene Shields of Punxsutawney, PA; six grandchildren, Kristin Keddie (Thomas) Toland, Alex (Lauren) Keddie, Zak Houk, Kayla Houk (Matt) Colarossi, Evan Houk, Elissa Houk (Stephen) Cowher; and seven great grandchildren, Austin Toland, Leighton Toland, Elle Keddie, Jaylyn Houk, Lucy Houk, Gavin Colarossi, and Levi Colarossi. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Wayne T. Houk; her second husband, Arthur C. Harlan; one son, James Jay Houk; one granddaughter, Justine Isabella; three brothers, Fred Weingartner, Clair Weingartner, and Ray Weingartner; and two sisters, Florence Nasti and Lilabelle Weisz. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 23, 2017, from 3:00-5:00 at the Church of Genesis, 303 N. Cedar Street, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 5:00 pm at the church with Rev. Ron Eade officiating. Burial will be in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that memorial contributions be made in Lois' name to Church of Genesis, 303 N. Cedar Street, New Castle, PA 16102. Arrangements have been entrusted to R.
