Obituary

Loretta "Lorie" Jean Umstead, 82, passed away on February 23, 2025, at Jameson Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania, after a period of declining health. She had been a resident at Avalon Care Place in New Castle for the past year.

Born on July 23, 1942, in New Castle, Lorie was the daughter of Alexander Temenski and Mary Bernarda Owoc. She attended Madonna of Czestochowa Catholic School before continuing her education at New Castle High School. A woman of faith, she was a member of Madonna of Czestochowa Church and later Mary, Mother of Hope in New Castle.

On October 19, 1959, Lorie married Russell K. Umstead in Winchester, Virginia. They settled in Volant, Pennsylvania, in 1963, where Russell still resides. Lorie dedicated much of her life to caring for her husband and children as a homemaker. As her children grew older, she worked for several years with Saga Food Service at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Lorie was a member of the Sparklers group at First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Russell K. Umstead; her son, Daniel J. Umstead (Jill) of Butler, Pennsylvania; her daughters, Dawna J. Menton (Frank) of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and Janice M. Patterson (Jeff) of Volant; and her sister, Carol Black of New Castle. She also leaves behind five grandchildren—Jesse, Tyler, Erica, Nickolas, and Benjamen—and one great-grandchild, Nadine.

Lorie was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Helen Wyza (John), Maryjane Kelley, and Margaret "Peggy" Plonka (Lee); and her brother Alexander "Sonny" Temenski.
