Louis Jackson Walls, 89, of New Castle, died August 8, 2011 at home after an extended illness.Born in New Castle on September 21, 1921, to Jay Earl and Elsie Etter Walls, he married Carrie Heckart Walls. Louis was a 1939 graduate New Castle High School and a 1943 graduate of Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, OK.A 48 year employee of Shenango China, he retired as the superintendent of manufacturing.A member of the American Society for Quality Control, he consulted on the quality standards of the Mayer and Pfaltzgraff companies. He authored articles on the history of product inprovement in vitrified china and the use of statistical quality control.Louis was comissioned in 1943 as a Field Artillery forward observer and communications officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the American Theater medal, the Asiatic-Pacific medal with four battle stars and assault arrowhead, Phillipine Liberation medal with two battle stars, and World War II Victory Medal.A 64-year member of the Mahoning Lodge #243 and the New Castle Consistory Legion of Honor, serving as Adjutant for several decades, he received the 33rd degree and served as Commander In Chief of the Valley of New Castle, AASR, 1986-1988. He belonged to the Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh and served as a member of the Cathedral Foundation. He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church.He is survived by his wife, Carrie Heckart Walls, and five daughters: Mrs. Harry (Carol) Cunningham of Butler, PA; Mrs. Mark (Kay) Withrow of Derry, PA; Mrs. Gary (Elaine) Reed of Mohnton, PA; Mrs. John (Barbara) Fries of Phoenix, AZ; and Mrs. James (Tammy) Nagel of Neshannock Twp.Louis was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Virginia) Vanatten and Mrs. Ned (Evell) Anderson, and his brothers David and Merrill.At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation.A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.
