Obituary

Mabel C. Kocher, 105, of Shenango-on-the-Green New Wilmington, PA died peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at her residence following a brief illness. Born on April 17, 1910 at the family's residence in New Castle's Upper Eastside, she was the daughter of John H. & Lula M. (Ramsey) Kocher. Ms. Kocher graduated from New Castle High School in 1928; she went on to graduate from Westminster College in 1932. Following graduation, Ms. Kocher taught at Shenango Area Schools for several years. In 1938, she returned to college and in June 1939 received a bachelor's degree in Library Science from the Carnegie Library School at Carnegie Institute of Technology now CMU. From 1939-1942, Ms. Kocher was an assistant Librarian at the Sewickley Public Library. In 1942, she returned to her alma mater, Westminster College, to be an assistant librarian at the R. G. McGill Memorial Library. In 1945, she became Acting Librarian and by 1947 she was appointed Head Librarian. In 1966, she received a Master of Science in Library Science degree from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (now Case-Western). In 1975, she retired from Westminster College as Associate Professor/Head Librarian. Although she had retired from full-time employment, she continued to be involved with McGill Library, primarily working on the Special Collection which contains books authored by Westminster alumni. In 2005, Westminster College awarded Ms. Kocher with an Honorary Doctorate of Literature Degree. Ms. Kocher was an active member of Third Presbyterian Church where-for the past several years-had been the longest and oldest member of the congregation. She was the first woman ordained as Ruling Elder at the church and was a long time Sunday School Teacher and member of the Queen Esther Class and Clerk of Session. Ms. Kocher had also been a member of Thursday Women's Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a world-wide traveler with her college roommate and life-long friend, over a thirty-year span they toured the globe going to every continent except Antarctica. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. at Third Presbyterian Church, 1315 East Washington Street, New Castle, PA. Memorial contributions in memory of Ms. Kocher may be made to the Third Presbyterian Church, New Castle; McGill Library at Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA. Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care-Benevolence Fund, New Wilmington, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to the R.
