Marjorie H. Headland, 92, of Avalon Springs Nursing Home, Mercer, formerly of E. Garfield Avenue, New Castle, passed away the afternoon of December 26, 2010 in Sharon Regional Hospital.Born October 6, 1918 in New Castle, PA, she was a daughter of Judge R. Lawrence and Olive Studebaker Hildebrand. She was married to Sgt. C. Bruce Headland March 6, 1943. He lost his life in Anzio, Italy in WWII on January 26, 1944 as a ranger with the 83rd Chemical Battalion.Marjorie graduated from New Castle High School in 1936. She attended Grove City College for two years and graduated from Grace Martins Secretarial School in Pittsburgh in 1939.She was employed as a secretary by the Pennsylvania Engineering Corp. for forty two years, retiring in 1981.In her earlier years she served as a Girl Scout leader and camp counselor. She also served as social secretary on the New Castle Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors and was a member of the New Castle Business and Professional Woman's Club for over fifty years. She was a member of the Gold Star Wives of America.Marjorie was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ethel Hurst Sunday school class and the Sparklers Senior Group.Her favorite hobby was painting in oil. She also liked cake decorating, ceramics, and china painting. She received special recognition for some of her paintings from the Hoyt Center during their annual show.Marjorie will be greatly missed by one sister, Marian H. Parker of Hermitage, PA; nieces and nephews, Kirsten Provance, Robert and Lynne Provance, James and Ruth Hildebrand, Kenneth E. Hildebrand, D. Lawrence and Donna Hildebrand and Joan (Provance) and Thomas Rapp; and many great nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Provance; one brother, Merle Hildebrand; and one nephew, David William Provance.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. John Yergan will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery.
