Obituary

Mary L. Canning, 95, of New Wilmington, passed away the morning of December 10, 2013 at Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare. Born October 7, 1918 in Ellwood City, PA, she was a daughter of Frank and Florence Michaels Potter. She was preceded in death in 1990 by her husband, F. Arthur Canning, whom she married August 8, 1940. Mary was a 1940 graduate of Westminster College and continued to support the school throughout her life. Following Westminster, she completed her graduate work at Youngstown State University. She was employed with the Union School District as a first grade teacher. Mary was a life member and former president of the New Castle Music Club and the Jameson Hospital Aid Society. A member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, she was active as a Sunday school teacher for 50 years, and served as an Elder. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Hays Bell of Rochester, NY; one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Diane Canning of Youngstown, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Charlie Baer of State College, PA; 5 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Esther Crowe; and one grandson, Arthur Canning. Mary's family extends a special thank you to the staff of Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare, for not only the wonderful environment they provided for their mother, but also for the outstanding care they gave her. A private service was held Saturday, December 14, 2013, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. and was officiated by Rev. Chris Weichman. Burial was in Oak Park Cemetery.
