Mary Patricia Preston Chambers, 88, of New Castle, passed away the night of October 20, 2013 at her home. Born July 2, 1925 in New Castle, she was the daughter of John Ray and Marjorie Duff Preston. She is survived by her husband of 62 blessed years, Robert N. Chambers, whom she married on October 6, 1951. Patti graduated from The Grier School, followed by Stephens Junior College where she received her private pilot's license in 1945, and Slippery Rock University. She was a graduate of the University of Southern California where she was honored to become a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa, the National Honorary Society in Physical Education. Also at USC she was a charter member and first president of the Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter there. She then came home to New Castle to teach Physical Education at Ben Franklin for three years. She is still fondly remembered as Miss Preston by many of her former students. She also taught one year in Virginia. She was later employed at Chambers Motor Company and Bomar Leasing Company. She was an active member of the New Castle Community Y, the New Castle Country Club, and LaPaloma Country Club in Tucson, Arizona. She, along with her husband, founded the Lawrence County Eye Bank and were very involved in the development of the Preston-Chambers Y Sports Zone. Among her many interests were baking, being known as "the brownie lady" in a section at the Steeler games. She also loved golf, gardening, and being with her family, especially at their island in Canada. She enjoyed bridge and was a member of the same bridge club from 1947-2012. She was a member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Robert Henderson Chambers of Olympia,Washington, James Duff Chambers and wife Niecy, of Annapolis, Maryland, and David Preston Chambers of London, England; one sister, Joanne (John F.) Preston O'Connell of Newtown Square, PA; and six granddaughters, Patricia, Halley, Julia, Emily and Lisa Chambers, and Katherine (Stephen) Chambers Papendick. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John Ray Chambers; and one brother, John Ray Preston, II. Patti will be remembered for her kindness to all people, her even disposition, and her sense of humor. A Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, November 3, at 4:00 pm at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church and will be officiated by Rev. Chris Weichman.
