Mary E. Elkin, 83, of New Castle, passed away the morning of August 10, 2014 at Jameson Hospital North.Born December 18, 1930, in Vandergrift, PA, she was the daughter of Harry E. and Helen H. Barkley Moore.Mary married William G. Elkin on January 19, 1952. He preceded her in death on September 28, 2010.A 1948 graduate of Vandergrift High School, Mary later attended Lawrence County Vo-Tech where she graduated in 1972 with her LPN degree.Mary retired in 1989 after being the administrator at the Almira Nursing Home from 1982-1989. Previously she had been a nurse and executive secretary at the Almira Home, a nurse at the Haven Nursing Home and a secretary at Universal Rundle.She enjoyed counted cross stitch, crafting, music, and had helped with Vacation Bible School at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church. Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (New Castle), and was an avid volunteer for Jameson Junior Guild where she had been past secretary, past president and oversaw the remembrance fund. She was also a board member at Jameson Hospital and Vista South.She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church.Mary is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and William Byers III of West Middlesex, and Elizabeth and John Baranski of Boardman, OH; and a sister, Valgean Warner of Apollo, PA.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Davis; and a brother, Harry Moore, Jr.Visitation will be Wednesday, August 13, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 10-11 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev. Michael Spicuzza will officiate. Entombment will be at Parkside Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to the Jameson Junior Guild Remembrance Fund, 1211 Wilmington Ave., New Castle, PA 16105.
