Merle R. Aiken, 87, formerly of New Castle Pa, passed away the night of April 15, 2022, at his home in South Amherst, Ohio surrounded by his loving family. Born February 22, 1935, in New Castle Pa, he was the son of James and Hazel (Stoops) Aiken. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Regina (Huff) Aiken, whom he married July 14, 1956 in New Castle Pa. A graduate of Shenango High School in 1954. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Grove City College Pa in 1958. Throughout his lifetime, Merle used his degree in electrical engineering for many companies. His expertise in magnetic component and power supplies afforded him many work opportunities. In New Castle, Delaware, he was employed with RCA to help in designing contracts for the Ranger moon landing and the Gemini project. At All American Engineering in Wilmington, Delaware, he designed the Germany catapult system to launch the F-104 aircrafts. While working for Spitz Laboratory in Yorklyn, Delaware, he developed contracts for Xenon Lamps that are used in college planetariums across the country. He was the owner of Powertronics, where he and his family worked by designing and building transformers for high school planetariums. He also designed, developed and repaired lasers for several companies. He finished his career in 1995 with Lorain Products in Lorain, Ohio after 13 years. Merle loved gardening, enjoyed fishing, trips to the casino, and eating good food around a table with his family. Family was most important to him, and he was always a man of integrity and principal. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, Ohio. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Susan Aiken of South Amherst, Ohio Sherrie Richards of Inverness, Florida and Pam (Steve) Miller of McKean, Pa; two sisters, Mildred Magee of Portersville Pa and Linda (Ronald) McCombs of Hubbard, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jennifer Stewart, Tom Eberle, Jeremy Ealy, Tyler Eberle and Tiffany Richards; and five great-grandchildren, Kayden, Avery, Grace, Connor and Amelia. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Charles, Robert, David and James 'Buck" Aiken and two sisters, Norma Shaffer and Marilyn Workman. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 22, from 10:00-12:00 at the R.Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle Pa. A Blessing Service will take place immediately following visitation on Friday at 12:00 at the funeral home with Rev. Glenn Whitman officiating. Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery in New Castle.
