Merle D. Brown, 72, of New Castle, passed away the night of September 6, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born April 18, 1943 in New Castle, he was the son of David E. and Margaret T. Whitmore Brown. Surviving at home is his loving wife of 27 years, Peggy Kitchen Brown, whom he married September 12, 1987. He attended Shenango High School. Merle served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Yorktown during the Vietnam War. He was also involved in high altitude photography on AWAC Recon aircraft. He was a utility man and backhoe operator at Pennsylvania American Water Company. Among his many interests, Merle was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and he was an ultra light pilot working towards his pilot's license. He was a Boy Scout Master for Neshannock Post 743 from 1972-1978. Merle was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he also served as a trustee. He was so well known by those in our area and because of his kind and friendly nature, was willing to help anyone at anytime. His heart was truly to serve others. In addition to his wife, Peggy, he is survived by one daughter, Kristen Brown of Sewickley, PA.; four sons, Bill Brown and Randall Brown both from New Castle, Richard Brown of Washington, and Philip Brown of Sandy Springs, GA; one brother, Patrick Brown of Lithonia, GA; 9 Grandchildren; 1 Great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia J. Adams; and one daughter, Brenda Brown. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral Service will take place immediately following at 6 p.m. with Rev. David Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
