Merritt H. Hagens, age 78, of New Bedford, passed away the night of July 28, 2016 at his residence. Born May 3, 1938 in Johnstown, Pa., he was a son of Olin and Suzie Rose Hagens. He was preceded in death on May 24, 2008 by his wife of 40 years, Dorothy C. Borowski Hagens whom he married on April 6, 1968. Merritt was employed for 44 years as a millwright with Youngstown Steel Door Company until his retirement in 2003. Among his many interests, he enjoyed coin collecting, woodworking, dancing and bingo. Merritt loved being able to help people when needed and giving of his time to others. A dedicated member of Mahoning Presbyterian Church, he was active in helping to take care of the church and maintain its grounds. He is survived by one daughter, Michelle (Pete) Majocha of New Castle; one son, Scott M. (Stacy) Hagens of Pulaski; one step-son, Paul Schumacher; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Edward and Bud Hagens; and two sisters, Dorothy Maloy and Frances Rock. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Mahoning Presbyterian Church, 4401 Sky Hill Road Pulaski, PA with the Rev. Richard Byerly officiating.
