Obituary

Michel A. Elchison Jr., 90, of Shenango Township passed away the morning of February 24, 2017 at Cura Health of Heritage Valley. Born July 15, 1926 in Ellwood City, he was the son of Michel A. Elchison Sr. and Bessie Lutz Elchison. He married Delores H. Beighley on February 16, 1946. Michel attended George Washington Junior High. He served his country in the Army during World War II as a Private First Class, and fought with General Patton and in the Battle of the Bulge. In earlier years, Michel was a partner in the B&E Grocery Store on Butler Avenue with his wifes parents and worked in the mold shop at Shenango China. He was later employed with the Carpenters Union Local 268 where he also served as the financial secretary until he retired in 1989. Michel had a love for dogs, gardening, bowling, travel, was an avid hunter, and was known as the checker champion. In later years Michel liked visiting with his friends at McDonalds. He enjoyed the game of baseball and for years was a coach, umpire, and organizer of Little League. A member of the Shenango Volunteer Fire Department, Michel often called Bingo at the fire hall. Michel held membership with the VFW post 315 and the American Legion. A charter member of the Independent Methodist Church, Michel served as the head usher for 13 years. Michel loved Jesus, and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by, one son, Ted (Mary) Elchison of New Wilmington; one daughter, Susan (Frederick J.) Crain of Niles, Ohio; four grandchildren, Debra (Jeff) Lyons, Rebekah Ledbetter, Jake Bruno and Jonathan (Melissa) Elchison; and seven great-grandchildren, Ethan Ledbetter, Adelyne Ledbetter, Jael Ledbetter, Brooke Bruno, Madison Bruno, Alexis Bruno and Dietrich Elchison. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Bessie Mae Elchison, Rose Marie Foltz, and Joyce Bell. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Frederick Gilbert of Independent Methodist Church officiating. Military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
