Nancy Elizabeth Hughes Smith of New Castle, PA, died peacefully in her home on Dec. 18, 2019, at age 90, after a lingering illness. Her parents, Ralph and Ruth Harris Hughes, and only sibling, Ruth "Sister" Hughes Bell, predecease her. They are now worshiping together in Heaven. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald Smith, Jr., and their three children, D. Bruce Smith (Cheryl) of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; Deborah S. Book of New Castle; and Barbara S. Picard (Fred) of Richmond, VA. Nancy's joy in life was her family and in addition to her three children, she is survived by eight grandchildren: Morgan Smith; Haley Smith; Elizabeth Belle (Steven); Barbara Anne Lewis (Matthew); Erick Picard; Ian Picard (Michelle); Colin Picard; Meghann Picard; and four great-grandchildren: Landon Lewis; Calleigh Lewis; Camille Belle; and Liam Belle. Over the years, Nancy (Nanny) wrote hundreds of hand-written notes to her grandchildren, many kept by them and tucked away. She is also survived by her sister's children with whom she shared a special bond: G. Thompson Bell, III (Leslie); Susan York (Reggie); and Christine Prince (Mike) Nancy, born November 7, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, PA graduated from Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA after which she attended Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. While still a student, she agreed to a blind date with a Colgate University student, who turned out to be her future husband. Nancy and Don married on March 21, 1953, and seven months later she departed for France where Don was stationed with the United States Army. They often reminisced about the two years they lived in France during which they managed, with few resources, to travel to Paris, Holland, Germany, and to Paris again. When Nancy returned to PA, she was an expectant mother, and she was overjoyed. Don's career with Bell Telephone of PA took them to Philadelphia; to Pittsburgh; and in 1960 to New Castle. Nancy made friends everywhere and she remained loyal to those friends. She was blessed with the gifts of service and hospitality. She was an active member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church participating in Tri-M Sunday School Class and health ministry team. She was a member of the Rotary Ann Club, a club consisting of wives of the then exclusively male Rotary Club, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Jameson Hospital Junior Guild, and the Walmo Garden Club. Later in life, she found renewed passion for service as a member of P.E.O. International, PA Chapter Y. Most importantly, she cared for her family, raising her three children, and enjoying life with her husband and their many friends. Her children's friends were always welcomed into their home. One such friend, recalling times spent in the Smith home, shared that when in Nancy and Don's home he always thought "This is how family should feel." Nancy loved entertaining; playing bridge; hosting and attending dinner club with friends; taking family vacations with her children and grandchildren; as well as attending Elderhostels with her friends the "Crazy Eight". A service to celebrate the life of Nancy Hughes Smith will be held on February 15th at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, 220 E. Clen-Moore Boulevard. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 to11 a.m. with the service to follow at 11 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by R. Cunningham Funeral Home of New Castle.
