Nellie C. Thompson, 99, of Fairhill Drive, New Castle, passed away the morning of March 3, 2011, in her home surrounded by her family.Born June 11, 1911, in Leesburg, she was the daughter of the late James and Annie Flannery Bowers. She married Joseph H. Thompson on April 27, 1936. He passed away on December 4, 1993. She graduated from Union High School in 1929. She obtained her teaching degree from Slippery Rock College and graduated in 1931. Nellie taught for Hilltop and Pine schools in Mercer County. She was an avid reader with a special interest in the lives of the presidents. She enjoyed flowers, canning, and traveling to Erie and Canada with her husband for fishing. Nellie was known as the family memory keeper producing many photo albums for her five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition she enjoyed sharing stories of the past with family. She was a member of St. Camillus Church and Cameo ClubShe is survived by her two daughters, Joye Delle Keenan, and her husband William, of State College, PA; and Roberta "Bobby" Ann Bower, of New Castle; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Harold, and her infant brother Carl Bowers; and two sisters, Vi Cotton and Genevieve Reagle.Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A blessing service will immediately follow the visitation at 1 p.m Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the funeral home. The Rev. Thomas Lewandowski of St. Camillus Church will officiate. A private burial will be held in Crestview Memorial Gardens, Grove City.
