Nicholas Binder, 96, passed away Saturday, November 23rd 2019 at his home in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was born in Mahoningtown on October 28, 1923. He was the son of Nick and Anna (David) Binder and husband of Elsie Kiminkinen Binder. Nick graduated from New Castle High School in 1941 and attended Westminster College. He was a court stenographer in New Castle for several years before joining the United States Army in 1948 where he served as Secretary to the General and played the trumpet in the Army Band. He and Elsie were married on July 12th, 1952 at the Bessemer Presbyterian Church. Nick worked for the Rand Development Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio before moving to Duluth Minnesota where he was a Plant Manager for a U.S. Postal Service vehicle manufacturing plant. Nick returned to New Castle where he worked at Universal-Rundle from 1968-1990 as a Plant and Manufacturing Manager, and later as their National Quality Control Officer. Although Nick retired in 1990 he certainly never slowed down. Nick was passionate in his humanitarian efforts, particularly with the local Rotary Club of which he has been a member of for 45 years. He served as president of the club in 1979-1980, Chairman of the Rotary International Scholarship Fund for 17 years and as Sergeant of Arms for 23 years where his sense of humor shined. He enjoyed collecting money by highlighting successes of members. Nick was awarded the prestigious Rotarian Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and was also named as a Paul Harris fellow for his contributions to the Rotary Club. Nick had a passion for strengthening international relations and hosted several exchange students and adults over the years. He said his "dream job " would have been to be a U.S. ambassador. Nick had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Nick very much enjoyed traveling with his wife, and his greatest joy was found in spending time with his family. He always looked forward to family dinners, game nights and loved keeping track of his winning streaks. Nick especially cherished his time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nick leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Elsie (Kiminkinen) Binder of New Castle, PA; their daughter, Holly (Binder) Umbs and son-in-law Daniel Umbs, both of New Castle, PA. Nick was a proud grandfather of Jonathan Haven of Tampa, FL, Danny Umbs, Alissa Campbell, and Justin Umbs all of New Castle, PA, and his great-grandchildren Charlotte and Noah Nicholas Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Virginia Horney. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30th at Northminster Presbyterian Church on Wilmington Road. Visiting hours will be from 10:00-11:30am and memorial service at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to New Castle Rotary Club #89 to the "Nick Binder's Nice Guy Fund."
