Paul Leslie Rowland, Jr, 89, of New Castle, passed away the evening of November 10, 2014 at Jameson Hospital North. He was born August 4, 1925, in New Castle to the late Paul Leslie Rowland, Sr. and Sara White Rowland. Paul married the former Joan Alexander on June 25, 1949 and they had 65 years together. Paul served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1943-1946 on the U.S.S. Rixey PH 3 in troop transport, hospital evacuation, achieving Quarter Master 3C Petty Officer. He attended Penn State University, received a BS in Science from Waynesburg University, a MS in Education Administration from Westminster College, and did graduate work at University of Pittsburgh. Paul taught science and algebra in the New Castle and Neshannock school districts, was the Junior and Senior High School principal at the Dayton Area and Union Area school districts, and was the Superintendent of the Union Area school district. He was president of Phi Delta Kappa, was Educator of the Year PDK, Westminster Chapter, and was a member of Middle States Association of Schools and College Advisory Committee. Paul was a member of Beta Theta Pi at Penn State. He was also a member of the New Castle Lodge of the Craft/Westminster 433, New Castle Consistory 32 degree, where he received 65 year recognition and was a 65 year member of the New Castle Consistory Legion of Honor. A member of the Sons of the American Revolution, New Castle Chapter, he served as a past president. Paul was also a member of American Legion Post 343, National Rifle Association, Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and was Scout Master of New Castle Troop 37. A member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, he was a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. In addition to his wife Joan, Paul is survived by his four children, Sandra Genkinger of New Castle, Paula (Bruce) Nolan of Mechanicsburg, PA, Susan (Tim) Grieve of Dallas, TX, and Dr. Paul (Jill) Rowland III of Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great grandson, Jason D. Hilton, Jr. Visitation will be Thursday, November 13, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc, 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Christopher Taylor will officiate. Burial will be at Castle View Gardens.
