Obituary

Pauline R. Brophy, age 89, of New Castle, passed away the morning of October 9, 2016 at her residence. Born May 2, 1927 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Frederick and Gladys McCoy Sizer. She was preceded in death on July 6, 1986 by her first husband, James W. Burns, whom she married on August 26, 1945. She subsequently married John D. Brophy on June 23, 1990, who also preceded her in death on June 7, 1995. Pauline was a 1945 graduate of New Castle High School. She was employed as an income maintenance worker for 19 years with the Lawrence County Welfare Office, until her retirement in 1988. Among her many interests, she enjoyed bowling, ceramics and casino's. She also liked the outdoors, often enjoying camping, fishing, gardening and travel. She was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and former Girl Scout leader. She loved most the time she shared with her children and her grandchildren. Prior to her membership at Croton United Methodist Church where she was active in church functions, she was a member of Eastbrook Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Burns of New Castle; two sons, Timothy (Patricia) Burns of Portersville and Daniel Burns of Pittsburgh and daughter-in-law Cindy Burns of New Wilmington; three step-daughters, Kathy Rees, Vera Angelo and Carrie Marshall all of New Castle; three step-sons, Dennis Brophy and Joe Brophy of New Castle and John Brophy of North East, Pa.; one sister, Marian S. Walker of New Castle; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Francis, George, Charles, James Robert, Raymond, and Delbert Sizer; two sisters, Hazel Miller and Lois Henle; and one step son, Gary Paul Brophy. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Long officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
