Pauline C. Jackson, 84, a retired school teacher, died Tuesday, January 19, in the Jameson Care Center, after a long struggle with Alzheimers. She was a resident of North Point in Neshannock Township. She was born March 28, 1931, in Erie, a daughter of Gregory and Bessie Economopoulos Christos. Her parents emigrated to this country from Greece in the early 20th century. The Christos family moved to New Castle in 1936. Pauline was one of seven daughters. Her father Gregory Christos owned and operated the P.O. Lunch on South Jefferson Street. A downtown New Castle bar and eating place, it had become a favorite stopover for the city's lunch and early evening trade. The restaurant is now under new management on the Wilmington Road in Neshannock Township. Pauline won the 8th grade American Legion scholastic award for girl students at the George Washington Junior High and on graduating from New Castle High school in 1948 she was in the top one percent of a class of over 600 students. She was a magna cum laude graduate of Westminster College in 1952, earning a degree in business education. She had served as president of the Sigma Kappa Sorority at Westminster. She taught business education courses at the former Mt. Jackson High School and New Castle High School and then spent 28 years teaching business education courses at Neshannock High School before retiring in 1991. Students later paid tribute to her for her courses in shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping. Her students won numerous Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) awards in state competition. Pauline also coached the girls' tennis team at Neshannock from 1972 to 1981. She had served as the financial secretary for the New Castle Meals on Wheels and the Neshannock North Point Condominium Association for a period as secretary. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she was an elder and a member of numerous church committees. She was a member of the Walmo Garden Club and an avid bridge player. She was married to W. Robert Jackson July 12, 1952 at the Westminster College Chapel, one month after her graduation from college. Pauline and Bob met at Westminster when he enrolled after serving 28 months in the Navy in World War II. When Bob asked Pauline if she would accompany him to the Sigma Nu Fraternity dance, she replied, "if you will go with me to the Sigma Kappa Sorority dance." They visited Greece twice, once in the early 1960s and later with their children and grandchildren. Pauline leaves her devoted husband Bob, a son, Atty. W. Edwin Jackson (and wife Janice) of Camp Hill, a daughter, Mrs. Alice Campbell (and husband Kevin) of Winnetka, Ill., and five grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Sarah Jackson of Washington, DC and Emily Jackson of West Chester, Pa., Robert Campbell and Sam Campbell of Washington, DC and Maggie Campbell of Indianapolis, Ind. She also leaves two sisters, Stella Blair of New Castle and Christina Harper of Temple City, California. Four sisters, Ethel Warren, Eve Vogan, Mary Kohler and Helen Gerris are deceased. Pauline was a strong advocate of education and was proud that her husband, her children and all of her grandchildren have college degrees. Her loving family is relieved that she is now in a better place. Calling hours are 4.p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday at the Cunningham Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, with visitation at 1 p.m. followed by a service at 2 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Westminster College or Jameson Hospice.
