Peter Edman of New Castle, died at the age of 91 on July 23. The son of Edith and Harry Friedman, he was born on September 27, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY.
Peter served in the US Navy Air Force Seabee Corps as an Aviation Electronic Technicians Mate at Pearl Harbor during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946, having been awarded the American Theater, Victory, and Asiatic Pacific medals.
Peter married Bernice Gutnick in 1948 and moved to Virginia where he worked on air at radio station WVEC. He later joined NACA (NASA) as a structural engineer. In 1955, Peter began work at IBM, Poughkeepsie, NY, where he held engineering and management positions until his retirement in 1988.
Peter and Bernice traveled extensively throughout the world. Both were heavily involved in community theater in both Virginia and New York. He was a founder, charter president, and an active member of the County Players community theater for 55 years. In 1999, he and Bernice received the Dutchess County Executives Award for their contribution to the cultural arts of the county. In 2014, Peter and Bernice moved to Jameson Place in New Castle. There he volunteered to coordinate music and movies for the residents.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, his son, Randy Edman, M.D., and a brother, Joseph Friedman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice Edman, New Castle, son, Dr. Neal Edman (Dr. Janice Grigsby) New Castle, daughter-in-law Virginia Edman, Glastonbury, CT, sister, Roslyn Farrell, Delray Beach, FL, sister-in-law, Joyce Friedman, Layfayette Hill, PA, grandchildren, Rachel Edman (Zachery Beatty), Pittsburgh, PA, Carly Edman, Pittsburgh, PA, Jeremy Edman (Dr. Maria Edman), NYC, and Lauren Edman (Scott Smitelli), Durham, NC, great granddaughter, Regan Edman, NYC, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 10:30 11:30 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rabbi Howie Stein officiating.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites.
