Richard Rentz, Jr. 71, of Neshannock Hills, passed away the morning of December 27, 2014 at home surrounded by loved ones after a long fight with cancer. He was the son of Richard and Thelma Mills Rentz of New Castle. He married the former Kathryn Mahaffey on June 11, 1966. He is also survived by four daughters, Amy (Craig) Litwiler of Horseheads, NY, Wendy (Grant) Cunningham of Warsaw, Indiana, Karen (Brian) Long of Washington Crossing, PA, and Julie Rentz and her partner Alexa Roop of Denver, Co. Richard also loved and enjoyed eight grandchildren; Katie Rentz, Cassie Long, Bria Long, Michael Long, Charlotte Long, Connor Long, Phoebe Cunningham and Simon Cunningham. He is also survived by his sister, Gretchen Reynolds of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; his brother, Jim Rentz of The Villages, Fla; his uncle, J. Fred Rentz of New Castle; and his loving companion and caretaker, Wendy Simon of New Castle. Dick was a life long resident of New Castle. He was a graduate of Penn State but always credited Thiel College for helping him to find his academic way. With tremendous appreciation for higher learning, Dick continuously sought to achieve a better understanding of the world around him. He often challenged others to take a different perspective and find solutions not previously achieved. Upon graduating from college, Dick worked for the New Castle Company before joining the New Castle News with his father, Richard E. Rentz, Sr. and his uncle, J. Fred Rentz. Recently, Dick commented that his decision to work along side these two inspiring men ranked among the best choices of his lifetime. He retired as publisher of the News in 1990. An active member of the New Castle Rotary, Dick was committed to serving his community. He attended New Wilmington Presbyterian Church. Dick leaves behind a legacy of honesty, integrity and a devotion to service above self. Dick was a wonderful husband and devoted father to his four daughters and was committed to raising competent, independent loving women. He spent countless hours passing on lessons of mechanics, problem solving, woodworking and engineering to his girls. His work ethic, character and his inventive and creative spirit will live on in them and many others. Dick's last eighteen wonderful years were made possible by donated organs from a young man affectionately referred to as "Bubba".
