Richard A. Sampson, 83, of 8 Sunnybrook Drive, New Castle, passed away the morning of May 19, 2014 at his residence.Born April 10, 1931 in New Castle, he was a son of Arthur E. and Maxine Underwood Sampson.He is survived by the love of his life, Maxine Klamar Sampson, whom he married on January 8, 1955.Prior to his 1949 graduation from New Castle High School, he was a track star setting several records, even finishing a race with a broken ankle. After his graduation he served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War for 4 years, from 1949-1953, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.Upon returning from the service, he attended Youngstown State University, graduating in 1960.He was a Systems Analyst and Programmer with Youngstown Sheet and Tube for over 20 years, and with Rockwell International for 12 years, until which time he started his own business of buying, remodeling and renting homes.Richard loved working with people and was known to others as having a big heart, always ready to help his tenants if they needed assistance.Because of his enjoyment for playing the guitar, he gave guitar lessons at Donati's Music Store, and played with the Penn-Ohio Country Music Association.He enjoyed being active, spending time fishing and hunting as well as handball and racquetball as evidenced by his competitions and championships.A lifelong member of Highland Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy (MacDonald) King Aston of Orange Beach, Alabama and Cheryl (Kim) Schuler of Boulder, Colorado; two brothers, Charles (Marlene) Sampson of Pulaski, and Kenneth (Pearl) Sampson of Sharpsville, PA; two sisters, Ruth (Cliff) Kaufman of Georgia, and Linda (Richard) Harris of Harlansburg, PA; three grandchildren, Jessica, Niya, Anthony; and two great-grandchildren, Shyla and Christopher.He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Sheryl Harris.Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 2:00-4:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will immediately follow visitation at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Matthew Bupp, Celtic Hospice Chaplin, officiating.Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Celtic Home Care and Hospice, 1000 S.
