Richard E. Whittaker (Dick), 90, of New Castle, PA, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, July 21, 2019. He was born November 22, 1928 in New Castle, PA to Clyde and Elisabeth (Stadelhofer) Whittaker. Dick attended New Castle High School and Mercersburg Academy where he was a standout basketball player. He graduated with a degree in business from Westminster College, where he played on the golf team. During the Korean War he served 4 years active duty and 4 years inactive in the United States Air Force. Dick was married to Carolyn (Green) Whittaker, who preceded him in death in 1987. He then married the late Jean (Abram) Whittaker who proceeded him in death in 2012. Dick was the founder of the R.E. Whittaker Company in 1961, which he grew from a local janitorial supply distributor into a globally recognized carpet cleaning system manufacturer. He held numerous patents and trademarks related to his passions - carpet cleaning and golf. He was active locally as a board member of the Neshannock Township School District, the American Red Cross, the Hoyt Center, Jameson Hospital, Blair Strip Steel Company, and First National Bank of Lawrence County. He was also President of the Lawrence County United Fund and Lark Workshop. Dick learned to ski during his time in the Air Force, which he enjoyed doing throughout the United States and Europe. He acquired his love for European travel and had many very dear friends there. Dick was a member of the New Castle Country Club and took great pride in achieving the Golf Championship three times. Dick's final passion was writing and sharing his devotional and inspirational books – One Day at a Time, Touching Reminders, and Engaging with God. Dick is survived by a sister, Elisabeth (Betsy) Malin (Tom) of Camp Hill, PA, a daughter Elizabeth (Lisa) A. Whittaker (Monica) of Denver, Colorado and a son, Thomas (Tom) R.
