Robert L. Clark, Sr., age 86, passed away the afternoon of April 23, 2022, at his home in Hickory Township. Born October 3, 1935, in New Castle, he was the son of Thomas and Hazel (Douthett) Clark. A graduate of Wilmington High School, he received is B.S. in Criminal Justice at American University and furthered his education at Youngstown State University. He served his country in the US Marine Corps with the military police. After his service obligation he was employed with Clark's Auto Clinic until he gained employment in 1962 with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC until 1980. Upon retirement in 1981, he relocated again to New Castle where he served as the Deputy Warden at the Lawrence County Jail and in 1989 was elected Sheriff. He maintained that role until his retirement 16 years later. Hunting, especially at his camp in Marienville, farming and traveling were among some of his many interests. He also enjoyed watching Fox News and eating a good meal, especially at his Texas barbeques that he hosted many years for county charity events. He is survived by his two sons, Robert L. Clark, Jr. of Damascus, MD and Scott (Melinda) Clark of New Castle; two daughters, Karen (Michael) Harrington of Clarksville, TN and Marcy Clark of New Castle; two grandchildren, Matthew Harrington of Clarksville, TN and Ryan Imhoff (fiance' Melissa Verlotte) of New Castle; and his faithful companion, Sara, his beagle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Nancy (Shaffer) Clark; four brothers, Russ, Tom, Fred and Dick Clark; three sisters, Ida Grace Guy, Naomi Shaffer and Dorothea Litzenburg; and recently a grandson, Michael Harrington, Jr. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 29, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Friday at 4:00 at the funeral home with the Rev. Matthew Bupp officiating. Military honors will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
