Robert D. McFarland, Sr., "Steamer", age 88, of New Castle, passed away the evening of Dec. 19, 2019 at Quality Life Services, New Castle. Born July 14, 1931, in New Castle, he was the son to the late Perry and Mary (Douglas) McFarland. He was married to his beloved wife, Betty J. (Peterman) McFarland, for 68 years. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2019. Robert was a graduate of New Castle High School and then enlisted in the Army, serving in the Korean War. He was employed by the New Castle Fire Department for many years, serving as the assistant chief. Following his retirement, he worked at Palladino's Auto Service. What gave Robert the most joy in life, besides his passion for the fire department, was spending time with his family. He was a former member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church. Mr. McFarland is survived by one son, Robert (Susan) McFarland, Jr. of New Castle, three daughters, Margaret (John) Ward, Roberta Quinlan, both of New Castle, Linda (Dave) Deitle of Colver, PA, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Robert is preceded in death by one sister Marjorie Cole and daughter, Virginia Riggans. Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 23 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A service will take place immediately after visitation at 4:00 PM, with the Rev. Aaron Christy of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church officiating. Military rites will be preformed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial will be at Oak Park Cemetery.
