Robert F. "Crash" Oesterling, 85, of Neshannock Township, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Born September 15, 1929 in New Castle, he was a son of James E. and Barbara Tury Oesterling.
Robert was a 1947 graduate of New Castle High School and served in the Eighth Air Force, stationed in Texas.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Oesterling was a sales agent for Dehn's Optical.
At the young age of 16 he obtained his pilots license. He was a member of P.O.R.C.S. (Penn Ohio Radio Control Society), was active in motorcycle riding, and a member of the Mercer County Shrine Club and Wheel Patrol.
Active as a 32nd Degree Mason with the Blue Lodge, he also served in the Mahoning New Castle Lodge #243; Valley of the New Castle Consistory; Tall Ceders of Lebanon; the Youngstown Shrine Club; Vem Vem Shrine in Erie, PA; Le-Me-BU #144; and the Order of "Q".
Crash was the only republican member of the North Hill Giant Eagle coffee clutch. He loved life and especially the companionship of his "furry" grandchildren.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathy (Greg) Wilson of New Castle; one son, Kit (Carrie) Oesterling of Death Valley, Calif; and his former wife, Dorothy Frey Oesterling.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his second wife, Jean Cestone Oesterling.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Wednesday at 7:00 p.m at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Erie Shriner's Hospital for Children.
