Dr. Robert C. Reed, 93, of New Wilmington passed away on March 4, 2021. Born on June 30, 1928, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Dr. Jay L. and Jessie (Nelson) Reed. Bob was the beloved husband of Esther "Lin" Reed for 69 years. They were married on June 28, 1952, at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle. She survives at home at the apartments at Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Col. Charles N. Reed (Teri); and brother-in-law, James (Jim) Finnessy (Betty). Dr. Reed graduated from New Castle High School in 1946. He attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland and graduated from Grove City College. In 1954, Bob received his D.M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Bob was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Pan Sophic fraternity and Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. Dr. Reed served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Dental Corps and interned at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Bob continued his Army service as the dental surgeon in Dachau, Germany from 1955 to 1957, and in 1956, he was promoted to captain. While there, Susan was born joining sister, Lynda. Returning home, Bob served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, 28th Division, from 1957 to 1960. Bob returned to New Castle in 1957 to join his father in dental practice. In 1985, he was joined by his son John R. Reed, D.M.D. Bob enjoyed his dental practice for more than 50 years. He was a member and past president of the Lawrence County Dental Society. He was also a member of the Ninth District Dental Society, the American Dental Association, both Jameson and St. Francis Medical/Dental Staffs, Lawrence County Red Cross, Greater New Castle Association Board, United Way, Mahoning Lodge 243, Scottish Rite Consistory, and sons of the American Revolution. An Eagle Scout, he was also on the Boy Scout Board. In 1966, he was ordained as a perpetual deacon of Trinity Episcopal Church and served the church for more than 50 years. Bob was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf and tennis. He was a member of the New Castle Country Club. What gave Bob the most joy was spending time and vacationing with all his family. He was the loving father of Lynda E. (Charles) Hayes of Aiken, South Carolina, Susan G. (Lee Shapleigh) Reed of Charleston, South Carolina, John R. (Diana) Reed of New Wilmington, and James L. (Nicole) Reed of Toronto, Canada; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at Trinity Episcopal Church, North Mill Street, New Castle. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be private.
