Robert E. Thompson, 90, of New Castle, passed away the evening of July 25, 2015. Robert was born on August 29, 1924, in New Castle, to the late Clarence Edwin and Ester Hazel Snyder Thompson. He married the late M. Louise Shiffler Thompson on July 6, 1943. She passed on May 27, 1983. He married, his wife of 27 years, Sharon Smith Thompson on May 21, 1988. She survives. Mr. Thompson was a self employed interior painter and worked, up until his retirement in 1991, at Youngstown Sheet & Tube. Robert served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during WWII. He enjoyed painting and fishing in Canada. Mr. Thompson attended First Alliance Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by his 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne & Judy Thompson, of Germany, Kenneth & Debbie Thompson, of New Castle, James & Barbara Thompson, of Trussville, AL; two step daughters, Kimberly Drummonds of Atlanta, GA, Kelley Burkhouse (Craig Blews), of Aliquippa, PA; one brother, Richard Thompson, of Conn.; 4 grandsons, 1 step-granddaughter; 1 great-grandson and 2 step-great-grandsons. In addition to his parents and first wife, Robert was preceded in passing by his sister, Mary Ann Taylor. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 12-2 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Wilmington Rd. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Harrison of First Alliance Church will officiate.
