Roy Matthew Bessell, 90, formerly of Mill Bridge Road, Ellwood City, passed away the night of October 25, 2015 at Countryside Convalescent Home in Mercer, PA. Born October 20, 1925 in Princeton, PA, he was a son of Matthew and Myrtle McConnell Bessell. He was preceded in death on September 25, 1995 by his beloved wife of 49 years, Erma Jean McElwain Bessell, whom he married in November, 1946. Roy spent his life as a farmer and was also the former caretaker for Pleasant Valley Cemetery. An active member of Rose Point Reformed Presbyterian Church, he served as a board member for over 40 years. Roy enjoyed playing horseshoes, gardening, and taking care of his lawn. He is survived by one daughter, Maryann (David) Reed of Grove City; four sons, Roy M. Bessell, Jr. of Mackanaw Island, Mich., Bruce (Karen) Bessell of Cloverdale, IN, Larry (Alicia) Bessell of Ellwood City, and Dale (Brenda) Bessell of New Castle, PA; two sisters, Viola McMurry of Tucson, AZ, and Karen Cook of Harlansburg, PA; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Lutton; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three sons, Wayne Bessell, and infant twin boys; two brothers, Gaylord and Clair Bessell; and two sisters, Mary Myers and Irma Wagner. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Point Reformed Presbyterian Church, located at 1166 Church Alley, New Castle, with Rev. Charles Brown officiating.
