Obituary

Russell L. Horchler of New Castle passed away on July 28, 2019 at Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington. Born September 7, 1924 in New Castle, he was raised in Mahoningtown by his parents Raymond F. and Mary (Patterson) Horchler. He married Mary Elizabeth ("Betty") Robson on June 1, 1946 who preceded him in death. After graduating from New Castle High School, he served three years in the US Navy in WWII. He served aboard the USS Booth Destroyer Escort in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Following the war, he attended Slippery Rock College and the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed by the New Castle Area School District as a Teacher, an Elementary and Secondary Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. After his retirement from the New Castle Public Schools, he served for two years as the Administrator of the New Castle School of Business. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church and more recently a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder at both churches. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Russell is survived by two sons, Russell T. (Mary Ann) Horchler of Fort Myers, Florida and Jeffrey W. (Valerie) Horchler of Erie, PA; a daughter, Nancy B. (Harry) Hammond of Hermitage, PA; 3 grandchildren, Danica (Dustin) Reed, Kristin Hammond and Alyssa Horchler; and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, Russell was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond K. Horchler and Robert P. Horchler and a grandchild, Tara Leigh Horchler. Private services were held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. Burial will be in the mausoleum at Castleview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church, 708 Highland Ave., New Castle, PA 16101, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
