Obituary

Ruth H. Martin, 98, of New Castle, passed away the morning of March 10, 2018 at Jameson Place. Born September 4, 1919, in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Susan R. Kay Hanna. She was preceded in death by her husband H. Duane McClelland whom she married in 1950. She subsequently married James W. Martin on December 28, 1988 and he passed away on May 26, 2014. Ruth graduated from New Castle High School in 1937. She attended Slippery Rock University where she earned her Master's Degree in teaching. She worked on the Draft Board for the United States Military and went on to work at Universal Rundle. Mrs. Martin was employed by the Neshannock School District where she taught first grade for 21 years until her retirement in 1984. Ruth was a member of the Mahoning Valley Grange #1649, PASR Retired Teachers, PEO Education Society, and Prime Timers. Ruth was known as the "Button Lady" having been an active member of the Keystone Button Club. Even well into their eighties, Ruth and her late husband enjoyed the sport of bowling. She was a former member of Second United Presbyterian Church, and more recently a member of Mahoning Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Martin is survived by six daughters; Susan (Ray) Stoner of Nacogdoches, TX., Rebbecca (John) Cole of DeLand, FL., Janet (Richard) Wamboldt of Mercer Pa., Laura Lee (Clayton) Stephens of Palmara Pa., Sarah (David) Erskine of Edinburg Pa., Louellen Willick of Naranja, Fl.; one son David (Cheryl) McClelland of Cortland, Oh.; son-in-law Charles Phipps of Edinburg, Pa.; 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, first husband H. Duane McClelland and second husband James Martin, Ruth is preceded in death by her son-in-law Eldon Willick, daughter Margaret Phipps, and sisters Virginia Davis and Wanda Martin. Visitation will be held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, on Friday March 16, from 6-8 PM and Saturday March 17, from 10-11 AM. A funeral service will follow immediately after the visitation on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Byerly. Burial will be at Mahoning Presbyterian Cemetery.
